Rice decided to switch his international allegiance following three friendly appearances, having qualified to play for Ireland through the heritage of his grandparents.The move prompted a critical response from former international team-mate McClean, who said he ‘didn’t buy it.’The Stoke City midfielder told Irish broadcasterRTE: He said he was a proud Irishman. Then he said he was a proud Englishman. If hes both good luck to him but I dont buy it. I think youre either one or the other.I was with Derry City when I got the call-up to play for the North, and I turned it down because its not my country, its never been my country.Im an Irishman.Its not just Declan, its anyone else. McClean was critical of Rice’s decision

Im an Irishman. I grew up on the island of Ireland, simple as that. We only want players here who want to play for Ireland, who feel Irish and are proud to be Irish.But West Ham vice-chairman Brady has taken aim at McClean for his comments, saying his ‘memory must be failing him’.In her column for The Sun, Hammers vice-chairman Brady wrote: The racism the England players endured in Montenegro on Monday was a disgrace and the authorities have to come down hard on this but a nasty form of prejudice then landed on Rices doorstep.3
