Gonzalo Higuain: The statistical trend which shows new Chelsea signing might only score five goals this season
Gonzalo Higuain is now a Chelsea player having completed his loan deal from Juventus. The 31-year-old striker, who has netted 237 league goals in 423 appearances across his career to date, will move on loan until the end of the season with the Blues having an obligation to buy him in the summer. But it might not be as good a deal as it seems on the surface.Gonzalo Higuain in action for AC Milan.1

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has previous knowledge of the player and under him the Argentine netted an impressive 36 Serie A goals for Napoli in 2015/16.This saw Higuain win the Capocannoniere – the Italian top-flight’s Golden Boot award – and equal Torino ace Gino Rossetti in 1928/29 (the season before Serie A was introduced in its current format).Upon signing the player, Sarri said Higuain is able to score 30 goals every season, but hehasn’t been as prolific since his 36-goal haul and is showing signs of gradual decline which might have alarm bells ringing at Chelsea given the possible transfer fee and wages involved when they sign him permanently.

Gonzalo Higuain's goal record since 2015/16

2015/16 – Napoli – 36 Serie A goals2016/17 – Juventus – 24 Serie A goals2017/18 – Juventus – 16 Serie A goals2018/19 – AC Milan – 6 Serie A goalsThe trend sees Higuain’s goal tallies drop by one-third EVERY season and this means he’s projected to hit 11 league goals for the whole 2018/19 campaign.Given he’s already netted six times, Chelsea may only get another five goals out of their new striker and this could drop to just seven next year. How successful Higuain becomes is yet to be seen but his numbers are clearly declining, which is worrying for the Blues in their bid to make the Premier League’s top four.
